The 2007-2008 church year has been a wonderful year of growth for children’s music at St. John’s.

A new group started -  Youth Singers.  This group is made up of students in grades 6 through 8.  The children have grown as an ensemble, musically and in number and we look forward to seeing what they will accomplish in the future!

Choristers  are now children in grades 3-5.  They also continued to grow musically and learned many new pieces last year.  Both the  Choristers and Youth Singers  participated in the Choristers Guild Festival  held in November at St. Johns.

It was so exciting to have 20 elementary and middle school choir members  leading the music at the Christmas Eve early worship service  and at Maundy Thursday worship during Holy Week.  The children put in a lot of rehearsal time and hard work to learn all the music  and they provided a meaningful worship experience with their music.

2007-2008 also saw growth in our Children's Chime ensembles.  Chorister Chimes 1  is a beginner group and  Chorister Chimes 2  is more advanced.  The children will continue to learn new music through May and are becoming very proficient ringers!

St. Nicholas Choir  starts for children at age 5 and we continue to accept new 5-year-olds throughout the year!  We have loved learning to use our singing voices,  playing instruments,  and learning different styles of music to praise God during the worship service.

Children's Music dates to remember for 2008-2009 :
  • November 8, Choristers Guild Festival:  Choristers and Youth Singers attend the C.G. Festival at First Congregational Church in Glen Ellyn from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.

Study I: The Miracles of Jesus.

Healer of diseases.  Master of nature.  Conqueror of demons and death.  Jesus not only preached the kingdom of God in word,  but he demonstrated it in power through his miraculous deeds.

In six engaging, interactive small group sessions,  this study provides a unique,  in-depth look at the miracles of Jesus that will open your eyes to their impact on the lives he touched,  what they reveal about God’s heart,  and their significance for us today.

Each session consists of three components:
  • historical and cultural background,
  • an engaging, close look at the biblical text and its meaning, and
  • accurate,  encouraging,  and challenging applications of the Bible’s message to life today.
This class meets in the Library from 9:50 to 10:30 AM,  on September 14, 21, 28, October 12, 19, 26.

Study II: Confident Parenting.

Video Teacher Jim Burns leads six small-group sessions,  and he includes his answers to the top 10 questions parents ask about confident parenting.

The session topics include:
  • Being a confident parent and being the transitional generation,
  • a road map for parenting,
  • finding replenishment for overcrowded lives,
  • communication with affection,
  • warmth and encouragement,
  • creating a grace-filled home,
  • and the lessons of the blessing and legacy.
This class meets in the Library:

It is designed to assist young children and their parents to discover the beauty and wonder of the Eucharistic Feast.   We study the stories of Jesus from the Bible, the prayers that are shared with the parish family, and the joy and peace of sharing in the Lord's Table.   Each child receives a Golden Book to personalize this memorable experience.

The program includes home instruction, classroom instruction and participatory exercises in the Nave with the instructor.

Most children are in Second Grade; some have and some have not received communion prior to the class.   All are welcome.  Look for announcements to sign up for this program.

For more information please contact Deacon Cathy Brookman.
****  CONFIRMATION CLASS, year 2007-8      ------------------------------
St. John’s Confirmation class of 2008 was confirmed on Saturday May 17th, 2008,  at Trinity Church in Wheaton.   Our newly confirmed members of the church were honored at a reception in the Parish Hall  after the 10:45AM service on Sunday May 18th.

The instruction process began in September 2007.   The class is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th graders who wish to receive the sacrament of Confirmation next spring.   The classes will be held almost every Monday evening from September 17th until next May, starting at 7:00 p.m.   Depending on subjects being discussed, some classes will be 90 minutes long while others will be 60 minutes long.

There was an informational meeting for parents of potential confirmands at St. John’s at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 10th, 2007.   If you’re not sure if your child is ready for Confirmation, please come to this session to learn more to help you in making that decision.   There is a sign-up sheet in the Communications Center for this meeting and for the classes.

Please note that this is an important decision and will require a commitment on the part of the students as well as their parents.   Attendance at the classes is required in order to be confirmed.  This is a decision with eternal implications!  Please give it your prayerful consideration.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call Judi Turner.

****  LAY EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS (LEMs,  LEVs)       ------------------------------
What ARE They  (Lems, Levs)  ?

                  NOTES:  April 26th,  2008.

Seniors' Residence Gives Opportunities for  Family Outreach.

For the past two years,  the LEM's from St. John's have conducted a Sunday service  for the residents at an independent living community for seniors  located just east of downtown Naperville.

The two LEM's who conduct the service usually are joined by 10 to 14 residents.  Following the service, everyone gathers for some fellowship,  baked goods and coffee.

This service provides an excellent way for the LEM's to bring St. John's out to the community.  Our family has enjoyed making the service an important part of our own outreach activity.  As LEMs, my older daughter and I conduct the service.  My younger daughter is responsible for the CD player,  and takes care of the music the residents like to sing during the service.  My wife brings home made breads  to go along with the coffee brought from church.

We spend about thirty minutes with the residents after the service,  sharing stories and talking about many experiences they have had  or places they have visited.  We have found these times to be very enriching and rewarding.  For those of us who may have parents or grandparents living far from Naperville,  this has been an excellent way for our daughters to interact with,  and hear stories from,  a generation that grew up and lived in a world much different from today's.  It is a privilege and a blessing  that we as members of St. John’s can share a service and fellowship with these residents.

Hopefully this means that a parish,  near to our loved ones living in a similar situation,  is sharing bread with them.

What They Are :  (LEMs, LEVs).

The Bishop licenses  LEMs  to administer the consecrated bread and wine during the Communion Service,
and licenses  LEVs  (Lay Eucharistic Visitors)  to go from a celebration of the eucharist,  to share the sacrament with members of the congregation who are home-bound.

The Fair is your opportunity to follow St. Peter’s advice  and find those places where you can share your gifts/talents at St. John’s.

All of St. John’s small groups (ministries) will have information booths in the Parish Hall  complete with posters,  flyers,  and registration sheets.

But that’s not all!  They’ll have live representatives there too,  to answer your questions and welcome you.

Come and see what St. John’s has to offer and what you can offer St. John’s in return.

Let’s grow together through service, fellowship,  and education.  As St. Peter said:

“As each has received a gift,  employ it for one another,
as good stewards of God's varied grace.”
(1 Peter 4:10)

The Fair will be in the Parish Hall  after both services on Sunday, September 13th, 2009.

    • The annual Spring Sing Music Program on May 8th was entitled 'Singing Through the Seasons'.  The church was filled with approximately 200-250 students, parents, grandparents, siblings and friends.  The preschool children did a beautiful job of singing songs in English and Spanish, playing instruments, and doing a song using Sign Language.  A reception was held afterwards in the Parish Hall.  Many thanks to the Parents and Teachers who helped to make this event possible!
