      The Year In Review:  April 26th,  2008.

The 2007-2008 church year has been a wonderful year of growth for children’s music at St. John’s.

A new group has started the  Youth Singers.  This group is made up of students in grades 6 through 8 and they have been meeting at the same time as the  Choristers  but in a different area.  The children have grown as an ensemble, musically and in number and we look forward to seeing what they will accomplish in the future!

The  Choristers   are now children in grades 3-5 and they also continue to grow musically and learned many new pieces this year.  Both the  Youth Singers and the  Choristers  participated in the Choristers Guild Festival  held in November at St. Johns.

It was so exciting to have 20 elementary and middle school choir members  leading the music at the Christmas Eve early worship service  and at Maundy Thursday worship during Holy Week.  The children put in a lot of rehearsal time and hard work to learn all the music  and they provided a meaningful worship experience with their music.

We now have 2 children’s chime choirs.  Chorister Chimes I  is a beginner group and  Chorister Chimes II  is more advanced.  The children will continue to learn new music through May and are becoming very proficient ringers!

St. Nicholas Choir  starts for children at age 5 and we continue to accept new 5-year-olds throughout the year!  We have loved learning to use our singing voices,  playing instruments,  and learning different styles of music to praise God during the worship service.

Dates to remember:

 May 11, Mother’s Day:  All children’s choirs sing at the 8:45 service.

 May 18, Music Appreciation Sunday:  All choirs sing and chime for the 10:45 service.

 May 18, Parent/child campfire:  6:00 p.m.

ST. JOHN’S TAKES ALPHA ON THE ROAD!

In the Fall of 2007 St. John’s Alpha team took the program to the western suburbs.

Alpha, originating in the UK, is a down to earth course that has given 100,000s of people the chance to explore the meaning of life.   Alpha Alumni are desired to help support bringing this great experience to our neighbor churches.   To Volunteer for the Team,   sign-up in the communication center   or contact Laura Sinclair-Harry.

Those interested in attending Alpha from St. John’s are welcome.   The course is FUN and low-key,   perfect for seekers or those desiring to discuss the basic tenets of the Christian faith.

****  CONFIRMATION CLASS, year 2007-8      ------------------------------
St. John’s Confirmation class of 2008 was confirmed on Saturday May 17th, 2008,  at Trinity Church in Wheaton.   Our newly confirmed members of the church were honored at a reception in the Parish Hall  after the 10:45AM service on Sunday May 18th.

The instruction process began in September 2007.   The class is open to all 6th, 7th and 8th graders who wish to receive the sacrament of Confirmation next spring.   The classes will be held almost every Monday evening from September 17th until next May, starting at 7:00 p.m.   Depending on subjects being discussed, some classes will be 90 minutes long while others will be 60 minutes long.

There was an informational meeting for parents of potential confirmands at St. John’s at 7:00 p.m. on Monday, September 10th, 2007.   If you’re not sure if your child is ready for Confirmation, please come to this session to learn more to help you in making that decision.   There is a sign-up sheet in the Communications Center for this meeting and for the classes.

Please note that this is an important decision and will require a commitment on the part of the students as well as their parents.   Attendance at the classes is required in order to be confirmed.  This is a decision with eternal implications!  Please give it your prayerful consideration.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to call Judi Turner.

****   EfM:  EDUCATION FOR MINISTRY   at St. John's.       ------------------------------
            Click for A Summary of EfM (below).

            EfM Update: May 18th, 2008:

How quickly the school year has gone by!  St. John’s first Education for Ministry (EfM) seminar year will come to a close on May 25,  as the group celebrates the completion of its first year together.  EfM is a program of theological education-at-a-distance of the School of Theology of the University of the South (Sewanee).  Students sign up one year at a time for this four-year program.  It covers the basics of a theological education in the Old and New Testaments,  church history,  liturgy,  and theology.

Why do we have EfM?  Lay persons face the difficult and often subtle task of interpreting the richness of the church's faith in a complex and confusing world.  Many need and want a theological education which supports their faith and also teaches them to express that faith in day-to-day events.  As the emphasis on lay ministry has grown,  EfM has come to play an important role by providing a program that develops an informed and knowledgeable laity.  The EfM program is preparation for the ministry to which we all are called.  It is that vocation for which we pray at the end of the Eucharist:  "And now, Father, send us out to do the work you have given us to do,  to love and serve you as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord."

If you have questions about EfM, or would like to join our seminar group and begin EfM next September,  or if you have finished part of EfM and want to come back and pick up where you left off,  please contact Fuad Saba.

            EfM Update: January 28th, 2008:

2007 marked the first time that EfM was offered at St. John's.   Our seminar includes 7 "seminarians"   as well as a mentor, Fuad Saba.   We meet weekly during the school year (except around holidays) in the St. John's library on Sundays from 5:30 to 8 PM.

A typical EfM seminar session includes a "get on board" opening discussion,   a review of one or more chapters from the Parallel Guide materials,   a Theological Reflection session,   worship and even snacks.   This year all of the participants are in Year One, which reviews the Old Testament.   We started out the year by sharing our spiritual autobiographies,   and then learned how to apply the basic techniques of Theological Reflection to passages of scripture.

As of the end of 2007 the class had reviewed chapters in the Parallel Guide dealing with the Hexateuch (Genesis through Joshua.)   We learned the "documentary hypothesis" regarding the authorship of these books,   and learned to appreciate the differing viewpoints and priorities of the various authors of these books   (the Yahwist, Elohist, and Priestly authors,   as well the two Deuteronomist authors,   and the redactor(s) who combined these various sources into the books of the Hexateuch)   as we studied the Creation,  Noah,  Babel,  Abraham,  Joseph,  Joshua and  Sinai / Exodus stories.

Over the remainder of the school year, we will tackle three more "Common Lesson" discussion topics,   expand the scope of our Theological Reflection techniques,   and review the Parallel Guide chapters dealing with the rest of the Old Testament.

We have room in our seminar for five more "seminarians" (class size is limited to twelve)   so if you are interested in deepening your faith   and expanding your vision of your personal ministry by joining EfM for the 2008 - 2009 school year (beginning in September 2008),   please contact  Fuad Saba.

            Summary of EfM.

Education for Ministry (EfM) is a program of theological  education-at-a-distance  of the School of Theology of the University of the South (also known as Sewanee).

Students sign up for one year at a time.   It takes four years to complete the program,  which covers the basics of a theological education in the Old and New Testaments,  church history,  liturgy,  and theology.  The seminar meets once a week during the school year,   under the guidance of a trained mentor.

Fuad Saba, a member of the congregation at St. John’s,  is an EfM graduate and a trained EfM mentor.   Please contact Fuad Saba if you are interested in finding out more about EfM or becoming an EfM student.

Summer Bible Study will be delving into the book of Titus for just 3 weeks.   This little book is packed with much insight and help.   Join us as we find out how to live with integrity in an ungodly world.

We'll also learn what doctrine and deeds have to do with what we believe,  and what the gospel says about the way we are to live.

If you have never been in a Precept Bible Study,  or have been in many,  this one is just right for you.    The study is easy enough for a beginner and great for a summer study.

Our 3 weeks begin Wednesday evening, July 16 at 7:00 P.M.  and will continue on the 23rd and 30th.

Please sign up in the Communication Center or contact Carol Beutler.

    from September 12th 2006,  to February 2008.
  • and his 'The Body and Society', ISBN=0231061013, (0/AD to 450/AD),
    from early in 2005  to the end of May 2006.
In the nine years previous to that,  we have agreed  (and disagreed)  over the following  (latest first):

  • Book of Genesis; 2nd Book of Kings; 1st Book of Kings;
  • Bruce J. Malina - Time Travel to Ancient Judea;
  • Paul F. Zahl - The Collects of Thomas Cranmer;
  • Book of Revelation; 1st and 2nd Corinthians; Galatians; Romans; Epistles of John;

****  HABITAT FOR HUMANITY       ------------------------------
Habitat for Humanity is a worldwide organization of volunteers that help provide affordable housing to needy families. St. John’s has volunteered with both the Fox Valley Chapter and the DuPage County Chapter for many years.

People 16 years and older who are reasonably fit are welcome to join us for a work day in the spring, chosen by the High School Group, in co-ordination with the Youth Minister. High school students and adults do whatever task is needed depending on the progress of the site. Tools and equipment are provided.
Tasks have ranged from installing cupboards, painting, sanding, rototilling, laying sod, planting perennials, installing a ceiling fan, doing wiring (under supervision) and installing a retaining wall.

We meet at church and carpool to the site, since parking is usually limited. Volunteers dress for the weather and bring lunch and drink, because there is no electricity or water at the site. It’s a great opportunity to "think globally, act locally". For more information contact the Group Leader  Sally Adrian.

****  LAY EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS (LEMs,  LEVs)       ------------------------------
                  ' What Are They  (Lems, Levs)  ? '

                  LEMs' NOTES:  April 26th,  2008.

      Seniors' Residence Gives Opportunities for  Family Outreach.

For the past two years,  the LEM's from St. John's have conducted a Sunday service  for the residents at an independent living community for seniors  located just east of downtown Naperville.

The two LEM's who conduct the service usually are joined by 10 to 14 residents.  Following the service, everyone gathers for some fellowship,  baked goods and coffee.

This service provides an excellent way for the LEM's to bring St. John's out to the community.  Our family has enjoyed making the service an important part of our own outreach activity.  As LEMs, my older daughter and I conduct the service.  My younger daughter is responsible for the CD player,  and takes care of the music the residents like to sing during the service.  My wife brings home made breads  to go along with the coffee brought from church.

We spend about thirty minutes with the residents after the service,  sharing stories and talking about many experiences they have had  or places they have visited.  We have found these times to be very enriching and rewarding.  For those of us who may have parents or grandparents living far from Naperville,  this has been an excellent way for our daughters to interact with,  and hear stories from,  a generation that grew up and lived in a world much different from today's.  It is a privilege and a blessing  that we as members of St. John’s can share a service and fellowship with these residents.

Hopefully this means that a parish,  near to our loved ones living in a similar situation,  is sharing bread with them.

                  What They Are :  (LEMs, LEVs).

The Bishop licenses  LEMs  to administer the consecrated bread and wine during the Communion Service,
and licenses  LEVs  (Lay Eucharistic Visitors)  to go from a celebration of the eucharist,  to share the sacrament with members of the congregation who are home-bound.

The annual Spring Sing Music Program on May 8th was entitled 'Singing Through the Seasons'.  The church was filled with approximately 200-250 students, parents, grandparents, siblings and friends.  The preschool children did a beautiful job of singing songs in English and Spanish, playing instruments, and doing a song using Sign Language.  A reception was held afterwards in the Parish Hall.  Many thanks to the Parents and Teachers who helped to make this event possible!
