CHILDREN'S  2008-9  MUSIC YEAR IN REVIEW  posted April 22nd, 2009 :

Holy Week was a special journey this year for St. John's Choristers and Youth Singers.

Choristers (3 through 5 grade) sang spirited anthems on Palm Sunday and on Easter Day.

Youth Singers (6 through 8 grade) joined the Parish Choir to sing an anthem on Palm Sunday and,  later in the week,  participated in the Maundy Thursday service in a number of ways;  sharing the Agape meal with members of the congregation,  coming forward for the foot washing, singing an anthem during Communion,  and leading service music during the latter part of the liturgy.  Some Youth Singers also served as Lectors and cantors.  It's moving to see children and youth in our parish take part in worship.  Familiar rituals and seasons of the church year become new again before our eyes.

On Graduation Sunday,  April 26th at the 10:45 a.m. service,  High School musicians shared their musical gifts in worship.

Our children's choirs and chime choirs will all sing and ring again before they take a break for the summer.  We have a few more Sundays of regular rehearsal times,  and then we'll celebrate this year's children's music ministry with a family campfire and party out on the Rectory lawn at 6:00 p.m. on Sunday, May 17th.

Many thanks to all the children and youth involved in music ministry this year!

CHILDREN'S MUSIC YEAR  2007-8  IN REVIEW  posted October 4th, 2008 :

The 2007-2008 church year has been a wonderful year of growth for children’s music at St. John’s.

A new group started -  Youth Singers.  This group is made up of students in grades 6 through 8.  The children have grown as an ensemble, musically and in number and we look forward to seeing what they will accomplish in the future!

Choristers  are now children in grades 3-5.  They also continued to grow musically and learned many new pieces last year.  Both the  Choristers and Youth Singers  participated in the Choristers Guild Festival  held in November at St. Johns.

It was so exciting to have 20 elementary and middle school choir members  leading the music at the Christmas Eve early worship service  and at Maundy Thursday worship during Holy Week.  The children put in a lot of rehearsal time and hard work to learn all the music  and they provided a meaningful worship experience with their music.

2007-2008 also saw growth in our Children's Chime ensembles.  Chorister Chimes 1  is a beginner group and  Chorister Chimes 2  is more advanced.  The children will continue to learn new music through May and are becoming very proficient ringers!

St. Nicholas Choir  starts for children at age 5 and we continue to accept new 5-year-olds throughout the year!  We have loved learning to use our singing voices,  playing instruments,  and learning different styles of music to praise God during the worship service.

Children's Music dates to remember  for 2008-9 :
  • November 8,  2008,  Choristers Guild Festival:  Choristers and Youth Singers attend the C.G. Festival at First Congregational Church in Glen Ellyn from 8:30 a.m. to 3:45 p.m.
  • November 26,  2008,  Thanksgiving Eve:  St. Nicholas Choir sings.
  • Decemer 24,  2008,  Christmas Eve 5:30 Worship:  Choristers and Youth Singers sing.
  • April 4th,  2009,  Palm Sunday ;  St. Nicholas Choir,  Choristers and Youth Singers sing.
  • April 9th,  2009,  Maundy Thursday :  Choristers and Youth Singers sing.
  • May 10,  2009,  Mother’s Day:  All children’s choirs sing at the 8:45 service.
  • May 17,  2009,  Campfire for Children's Music Ministry:  Children and families are invited to attend.  6:00 p.m. at the fire pit near the Pennywise Shoppe.

Learning From the Hymns,  posted 06-03-2009.

This July we will be doing something different for our Summer Study.  We will be Learning From the Hymns.  We’ll study six of our classic hymns in light of Scripture.  We’ll learn a bit about those who wrote them and find out why they were written.  We’ll take a good look at the lyrics and see how we can apply them to our lives today.  These hymns can affect our view of God and our life as Christians.  They bring praise to Jesus and comfort, joy and knowledge of our Lord to us.  Please join us for this time of study and fellowship.  There will be no homework!

Classes will be on Wednesday evenings  from 7:00pm - 9:00pm  on July 8th,  15th and  22nd.  Mark your calendars.  Come to one or come to all 3 sessions as your summer schedules permit.  Sign up in the Communication Center or contact Carol Beutler.

****  PRECEPT BIBLE STUDIES Fall/Winter 2009.       -----------------------
Carol Beutler will again lead the Precept Bible Study this fall beginning also in September.  The emphasis will be Romans, chapters 9-11, The Sovereignty of God and the Free Will of Man.

Romans has been called the Constitution of our faith and the jewel in the crown of epistles.  Romans is foundational to our understanding of our Christian faith.  And the truths revealed are foundational to our experience of a victorious Christian life.  This epistle explains the nature of the righteousness that God commands from - and gives to - us as believers in Jesus Christ.  God doesn't go back on His promises.  He can always be trusted.  Romans 9 - 11 is an extended discussion of the subject of God's sovereignty -- election, predestination, and responsibility.

Part 3 begins with St. Paul's discussion of perplexing questions about the Jewish people.  It focuses on His choice of Israel and His faithfulness to His covenant.  Why were they refusing the gospel?  How does this new scheme of righteousness apart from the law relate to the privileged position of the Jews?  Have the promises contained in their covenants failed?  Where do Christians and Jews fit into His sovereign plan?

Please join us as we dig into the Scriptures and find answers to these questions.  The class is divided into 2 parts.  The first half is a discussion of the homework and the second half is an informative video.  You do not have to have been in the previous Romans studies to join Part 3.

There will be two classes:
  • Monday evenings from 7:00 - 9:00 p.m.  beginning September 21,  and
  • Wednesday mornings 9:00 - 11:15 a.m.  beginning September 23.
Mark your calendars now and sign up soon so that we can order your workbook.    ... Carol Beutler.

Posted July 26th,  2008.

VBS  2008  was held July 14-18,  from 8:45AM to 12:30PM.

St. John’s was host to 114 children,  we had 24 junior staff volunteers and 31 adult staff volunteers.

The cost of VBS was 25.00 per student,  but this could not begin to cover the costs of the entire week.  Without the donations of craft supplies and food items,  we would not have been be able to support this outreach ministry to our community.

Thank you to all the parishioners who donated these items.

MIDDLE SCHOOL MOMENTS,  What I learned at Vacation Bible School,  posted 07-22-2009.

Every year I start brainstorming.  What do most middle and high schoolers like?  What will challenge their thoughts?  What will allow them to relax?  What will make them feel appreciated?  What will help them get to know other kids they have never met before?

These are the questions I use to help me shape a plan for junior staff break times at Vacation Bible School.  Every summer our church is invaded by more than 100 kids,  many who do not attend church here,  to participate in a program that tells the story of God’s love and our opportunity for salvation through Bible stories,  games,  adventure,  drama,  crafts,  music  and snacks.  The program is excellent in every department.  Who expects the snack to reinforce the story of Jesus recruiting disciples to be fishers of men?  I was in awe of the licorice fishing line on a pretzel rod pole being cast out for goldfish crackers.  There is no opportunity wasted for kids to be grown in Christ.

Yet the middle schoolers often help each  classroom and area with childcare and leadership.  My agony is to take these servants and feed them.  Now I am horrible with food.  I try to avoid being in charge of snacks anytime ever.  But I do get excited to feed their souls.  So one year we watched and discussed movie clips.  One year we listened to current song lyrics to hear the message.  This year I settled on games.  So every day the junior staff would play a game together which would open us up to a discussion about the day’s bible story and what it might mean in our lives.

Some days kids would simply not be at their break.  The discussion would go on without them and later I would hear that responsibilities simply wouldn’t allow them a break.  It was no horrible tragedy for a kid to miss the break but it made me think of how easy it is for us to mix up what God’s work and what God’s call might really be in our lives.  It was tempting for some kids to just figure that they were there to serve and didn’t really need the break time.  I disagreed.  I maintained that especially while kids are still kids it is the most precious lesson to learn that our first step to any task is to sit with the Savior to hear what he has to say.  It was a serious lesson in my eyes to see that the break time as an opportunity to meet with Christ in community should remain a nonnegotiable no matter how busy it became elsewhere.  And the more I thought about it the more it disturbed me.  We are able to pull off this amazing Vacation Bible School that draws in new kids every year,  that spends hours daily to reinforce that this is the MOST important story ever told,  how God loved and died for you to invite you into an eternal relationship.  We invest heavily in makng this week happen so that kids would know what is most important.

Yet as adults we so often forget these same truths after kids finish fifth grade, or Confirmation.  Those are the years kids stop making it to Sunday School as often or they don’t see that break time as such a big deal.  They begin to invest less time in the community of those Sunday School classes and become less connected to each other and the Savior as a result.

Adults,  this underestimation of what it means to seek God and remain growing in him is something that can kill us.  Just like I need to remember,  then remind kids that these breaks are healthy for them,  so we as adults need to remember what it means to our lives to set aside some time for just me and God today,  not waiting until I am free from busyness before bonding together.  This is the point it has taken so long to get to.  As I pondered a way to draw kids to Christ in our break times,  I am reminded to not skip out on my own private connection to the Lord everyday, not just on the days when I have time,  but hopefully especially on the days I feel overwhelmed and grumpy.  This was the most vivid lesson I took home from VBS. I pray it is a place where God might be speaking to your hearts as well.  Michelle Zegarski

JUNIOR HIGH SERVICE PROJECT,  posted 07-22-2009.

The Junior High Youth Group Service Project needs your help.  As a service project, the Junior High Youth Group has volunteered to rake and turn the mulch in the preschool playground monthly.  This may seem like an odd chore,  but it’s part of the Department of Children and Family Services’ (DCFS) regulations and is necessary in order to keep our license.  The regular raking of the area keeps the playground free of weeds,  twigs and sticks  and prevents mold from growing.

In order for the youth to do this good deed,  they need equipment.  If you have a potato fork or a metal garden rake which you can lend to us, please contact the church office at 1-630-355-0467.

The first raking of the season will be on August 30 prior to the preschool’s start date.

****  FOYER GROUPS       ------------------------------
Foyer Groups'  Kick Off Meetings  are Saturdays October 18 and 25.

Foyer groups are gatherings of eight to ten parishioners (or of four to five families) who meet in homes or at a restaurant to share a simple meal and fellowship.  They provide a means to develop new friendships and deepen old ones.

St. John’s is a family oriented parish, so we will have two categories of Foyer Groups - Adults,  and Families.  Gatherings normally are once a month on Friday or Saturday evenings,  or on Sunday afternoons  - whichever works best for each particular group.  They usually meet in someone's home for a potluck supper,  or the group can choose to meet at a restaurant.  Each group decides the date and location of the gathering.

Our First Session runs for 3 months November,  December  and January.  Then in February we will reform the groups,  have another kick-off and start a new session, with different groups of adults or families meeting together for March, April and May.

We will start our  Adult  Foyer Groups with a Wine and Cheese Celebration in the Parish Library,  5:30pm - 6:30pm  on Saturday, October 18.  Initial groups will be formed at that time.  Some groups may choose to continue getting to know each other by going out to dinner together that evening.

The  Family  Foyer Groups will start off with a Pasta Dinner Celebration on Saturday, October 25,  4:00 - 6:00pm  in the Parish Hall.  The evening will include a special 'Surprise' entertainment for the children.

Please join us either Saturday,  October 18 or 25,  to participate in the Foyer Groups.  There will be a sign-up card and brochure at the information table in the Narthex during coffee hour on Sunday mornings.

For additional information please check the Communications Area (by the Parish Hall),  or  call the Parish Office.

****  HABITAT FOR HUMANITY       ------------------------------
Habitat for Humanity is a worldwide organization of volunteers that help provide affordable housing to needy families.
St. John’s has volunteered with both the Fox Valley Chapter and the DuPage County Chapter for many years.

People 16 years and older who are reasonably fit are welcome to join us for a work day in the spring, chosen by the High School Group, in co-ordination with the Youth Minister. High school students and adults do whatever task is needed depending on the progress of the site. Tools and equipment are provided.
Tasks have ranged from installing cupboards, painting, sanding, rototilling, laying sod, planting perennials, installing a ceiling fan, doing wiring (under supervision) and installing a retaining wall.

We meet at church and carpool to the site, since parking is usually limited. Volunteers dress for the weather and bring lunch and drink, because there is no electricity or water at the site. It’s a great opportunity to "think globally, act locally". For more information contact the Group Leader  Sally Adrian.

****  LAY EUCHARISTIC MINISTERS (LEMs,  LEVs)       ------------------------------

Posted 04-26-2008.

What ARE They  (Lems, Levs)  ?

                  NOTES:  April 26th,  2008.

Seniors' Residence Gives Opportunities for  Family Outreach.

For the past two years,  the LEM's from St. John's have conducted a Sunday service  for the residents at an independent living community for seniors  located just east of downtown Naperville.

The two LEM's who conduct the service usually are joined by 10 to 14 residents.  Following the service, everyone gathers for some fellowship,  baked goods and coffee.

This service provides an excellent way for the LEM's to bring St. John's out to the community.  Our family has enjoyed making the service an important part of our own outreach activity.  As LEMs, my older daughter and I conduct the service.  My younger daughter is responsible for the CD player,  and takes care of the music the residents like to sing during the service.  My wife brings home made breads  to go along with the coffee brought from church.

We spend about thirty minutes with the residents after the service,  sharing stories and talking about many experiences they have had  or places they have visited.  We have found these times to be very enriching and rewarding.  For those of us who may have parents or grandparents living far from Naperville,  this has been an excellent way for our daughters to interact with,  and hear stories from,  a generation that grew up and lived in a world much different from today's.  It is a privilege and a blessing  that we as members of St. John’s can share a service and fellowship with these residents.

Hopefully this means that a parish,  near to our loved ones living in a similar situation,  is sharing bread with them.

What They Are :  (LEMs, LEVs).

The Bishop licenses  LEMs  to administer the consecrated bread and wine during the Communion Service,
and licenses  LEVs  (Lay Eucharistic Visitors)  to go from a celebration of the eucharist,  to share the sacrament with members of the congregation who are home-bound.

Posted 07-19-2009.

The Adults'  Ministry Fair is on  Sunday, September 20th, 2009.

The Fair is your opportunity to follow St. Peter’s advice  and find those places where you can share your gifts/talents at St. John’s.

All of St. John’s small groups (ministries) will have information booths in the Parish Hall  complete with posters,  flyers,  and registration sheets.

But that’s not all!  They’ll have live representatives there too,  to answer your questions and welcome you.

Come and see what St. John’s has to offer and what you can offer St. John’s in return.

Let’s grow together through service, fellowship,  and education.  As St. Peter said:

“As each has received a gift,  employ it for one another,  as good stewards of God's varied grace.”  (1 Peter 4:10)

The Fair will be in the Parish Hall  after both services on Sunday, September 20th, 2009.
